P0300 Code Nissan Frontier: Random Misfire Diagnosis

Diagnose Frontier P0300 using cylinder and bank counts, plugs, coils, injectors, trims and compression under truck load.

FORD PRIMARY SOURCES·GENERATION-AWARE·REVIEWED AUGUST 21, 2026
WHAT P0300 MEANS

P0300 means several Frontier cylinders misfired or no single cylinder dominated. Preserve P0301–P0306 counters, bank trims, temperature and load before moving components. One cylinder needs plug, ignition, injector and compression tests; one V6 bank raises local intake, fuel or cam causes; both banks raise shared MAF, fuel supply, voltage or contamination. Towing may expose the fault, but a flashing MIL requires reducing load immediately to protect catalysts.

SAE/Ford description: Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
DRIVING RISKStop soon

A flashing MIL means catalyst-damaging active misfire. Stop sustained driving. Stop also for raw fuel, severe shaking, overheating or mechanical noise.

P0300 diagnostic path — each candidate cause paired with the test that separates it. The full cause matrix, with the evidence each cause needs, is below.

CAUSE MATRIX

What can set P0300—and how to separate it

The order below is evidence-driven, not a universal probability ranking. Vehicle year, repair history, companion codes and the operating condition in freeze frame change where diagnosis should begin.

Possible causeEvidence that supports itFirst useful test
Worn/fouled plug or ignition faultCylinder leader and controlled swap followsLabelled plug/ignition test

Capture counters under the actual truck condition

Save cylinder counts at cold start, idle and the load from freeze frame. A trailer or climb may reveal weak ignition, but reproduce in a controlled test rather than risking traffic with a flashing lamp.

Label plugs and coils before moving one item. One controlled swap is evidence; moving several components destroys the cylinder pattern.

Use deposits and bank trims together

Compare plug gap, fuel wetness, oil ash and unusual cleaning across cylinders. On a V6, align those findings with Bank 1/Bank 2 fuel trims and exhaust clues.

If the fault stays on one cylinder after ignition testing, evaluate injector contribution, compression and leak-down. If several cylinders share a bank, inspect its intake and cam timing.

Shared faults require system tests

Both-bank or all-cylinder counts move MAF accuracy, intake leakage, fuel pressure, charging voltage and contaminated fuel higher. Do not replace a full coil set without confirming ignition involvement.

Verify stable counters under the original temperature and load with no pending P0300. Avoid sustained heavy throttle until catalyst risk is gone.

BEFORE CLEARING

Save these scan-data clues

Freeze frame is a snapshot of conditions when the PCM matured the fault. It can distinguish an idle-only problem from a load, cold-start or monitor-completion problem. Clearing first throws that context away.

TEST SEQUENCE

A practical diagnostic workflow

  1. 01
    Identify engine and bank layout

    Cylinder patterns differ.

  2. 02
    Preserve counters

    Save cold/load evidence.

  3. 03
    Inspect plugs in order

    Deposits direct testing.

  4. 04
    Target ignition

    Use one controlled test.

  5. 05
    Test fuel and air

    Graph pressure/trims and smoke paths.

  6. 06
    Prove mechanical health

    Use compression/leak-down/timing.

  7. 07
    Verify original condition

    Avoid a flashing-MIL road test.

!
Do not load the parts cannon

Do not replace the most commonly named component from P0300 alone. Confirm the exact engine, preserve evidence and complete the manufacturer test sequence before ordering parts.

APPLICATION BOUNDARIES

Why the model year changes the test

Frontier diagnostics span D22, D40 and D41 trucks with KA24DE, VG33E, QR25DE, VQ40DE and VQ38DD engines, rear- or four-wheel drive, and manual or conventional automatic transmissions. North American Frontier did not use the Nissan CVT step-motor system associated with P1778. Confirm VIN, engine, transmission, drivetrain and ECM calibration before applying any code definition or bulletin.

  • KA24DE, VG33E, QR25DE, VQ40DE and VQ38DD cylinder layouts differ.
  • V6 bank patterns are valuable diagnostic evidence.
  • P0171/P0101 companions raise shared air/fuel priority.
  • P0011/P0340 companions raise timing and signal priority.
COMMON QUESTIONS

P0300 FAQ

Does P0300 mean all coils failed?+

No.

Can I drive?+

Not with flashing MIL or strong shaking.

Can bad fuel cause it?+

Yes.

Should I replace plugs first?+

Inspect and record them first.

Can vacuum leaks cause it?+

Yes.
