P0171 means the Frontier ECM added excessive fuel correction on Bank 1. Save trims at idle and load before clearing. Correction strongest at idle favors intake, PCV, brake-booster or purge leakage; worsening under load favors MAF under-reporting or fuel delivery. On VQ40DE/VQ38DD, compare Bank 2: one-bank lean points local, while both banks point shared. Exhaust leakage and upstream A/F sensor response still need proof before sensor replacement.

How to clear P0171 and confirm the repair

Clearing is the final step, not the first. Save the original freeze frame and trim pattern, correct the proven fault, and then use the scan tool to erase codes if the service procedure calls for it. Disconnecting the battery is a poor substitute: it can erase learned values and unrelated settings without proving anything.

Warm the engine to closed loop and repeat the same idle and higher-airflow comparison used during diagnosis. Bank 1 should no longer require abnormal positive correction, Bank 2 should remain a useful reference, and the repaired hose or seal should pass a second smoke inspection. Then reproduce the load and temperature recorded in freeze frame without forcing unsafe operation.

Recheck pending codes after the drive and confirm readiness progresses normally. A lamp that remains off for five minutes at idle is not proof. If trims drift positive again, stop and preserve the new data rather than clearing repeatedly; an intermittent purge, wiring or fuel-delivery fault may need a longer graph and a different operating condition.

Compare idle, load and the other bank

Record short- and long-term corrections at warm idle, raised rpm and a controlled road load. Vacuum leaks dominate at idle; weak supply may become visible only under demand.

On V6 trucks, one-bank correction suggests local intake, injector, exhaust or A/F sensor faults. Equal correction on both banks supports MAF, purge, fuel supply or shared intake leakage.

Smoke truck-specific vacuum paths

Inspect the flexible intake duct, PCV, brake-booster line and manifold seals, then smoke-test rather than spraying cleaner. Engine movement and off-road dust can expose leaks not obvious at rest.

Isolate purge and observe trim change. A valve leaking when commanded closed can create idle lean correction and refueling complaints.

Test fuel supply under safe demand

Use the engine-specific pressure/volume procedure and injector contribution data. A pump that passes idle may fail under towing load; direct injection requires special precautions.

Check pre-sensor exhaust leakage and A/F response, then confirm trims remain near target with no pending P0171 in the original condition.

Frontier diagnostics span D22, D40 and D41 trucks with KA24DE, VG33E, QR25DE, VQ40DE and VQ38DD engines, rear- or four-wheel drive, and manual or conventional automatic transmissions. North American Frontier did not use the Nissan CVT step-motor system associated with P1778. Confirm VIN, engine, transmission, drivetrain and ECM calibration before applying any code definition or bulletin.
