Save desired and actual intake angle for both VQ banks through idle and controlled rpm. One-bank lag or over-advance narrows local solenoid, oil passage, phaser or feedback faults.
An inline-four has no Bank 2 control. Use the exact engine’s known-good data instead of inventing a second-bank comparison.
Test lubrication and circuit before the phaser
Verify oil specification, level, filter and mechanical pressure, then test solenoid current and command response. Towing history may expose hot-oil behavior, but do not reproduce high load when pressure or noise is unsafe.

Resolve P0340/P0335 dropouts first. Clean signals with a stable phase offset and rattle move timing-chain or phaser inspection higher.

Why the model year changes the test
Frontier diagnostics span D22, D40 and D41 trucks with KA24DE, VG33E, QR25DE, VQ40DE and VQ38DD engines, rear- or four-wheel drive, and manual or conventional automatic transmissions. North American Frontier did not use the Nissan CVT step-motor system associated with P1778. Confirm VIN, engine, transmission, drivetrain and ECM calibration before applying any code definition or bulletin.
- QR25DE has one bank; VQ40DE/VQ38DD bank location must be verified.
- VQ38DD control and fuel hardware differs from VQ40DE.
