WHAT P0017 MEANS

P0017 means the Optima ECM found Bank 1 exhaust-cam position outside its expected relationship with the crankshaft. It does not prove the crank or cam sensor failed. Save P0014/P0016 and desired/actual CVVT data, verify oil and pressure, scope crank with the exhaust cam, and command the exhaust OCV. Missing/noisy edges favor circuits; clean signals with fixed phase displacement favor phaser, indexing, reluctor or timing-drive inspection. Confirm the exact engine before any teardown.

The DTC measures phase rather than component identity

The ECM compares crank and cam edges while accounting for commanded CVVT. Two new sensors cannot correct a physically misindexed cam.

Save all correlation codes and when they set. Both intake and exhaust errors suggest shared timing more than exhaust-only P0017.

Waveforms separate electrical from mechanical evidence

Capture cranking, cold and hot signals while load-testing supplies and grounds. An intermittent missing edge differs from a repeatable angular offset.

Command exhaust CVVT and check desired/actual movement only after oil pressure is proven safe.

Inspect the exact engine's indexing

If phase is stable but wrong, follow KGIS for TDC, marks, phaser, reluctor and chain inspection. Hybrid, Theta, Nu and V6 procedures differ.

Verify stable phase hot and cold with no pending P0017 after repair.
