A genuine cold soak prevents false conclusions
Before startup, ECT and IAT should be reasonably close to ambient after sitting long enough. A biased ECT can make a healthy thermostat appear slow, so capture this comparison before engine heat spreads.
Do not use a five-minute cool-down as a cold-soak test. Residual engine heat creates misleading sensor differences.
Watch when heat reaches the radiator
A thermostat that leaks open can warm the radiator side too early and flatten the engine-temperature rise. Use safe non-contact measurement and scan data; keep hands away from fans and belts.
If temperature rises normally but the PID remains low, move toward sensor/circuit evidence. If the engine truly stays cool, inspect thermostat application, installation and fan operation.
Hybrid warm-up must be measured during engine run time
A Corolla Hybrid may switch the gasoline engine off while the vehicle remains READY. Judge warm-up using actual engine-run data rather than elapsed trip time alone.
After repair, wait for another comparable cold start. A cleared code during a warm restart cannot verify the monitor that originally failed.
Save these scan-data clues
Freeze frame is a snapshot of conditions when the PCM matured the fault. It can distinguish an idle-only problem from a load, cold-start or monitor-completion problem. Clearing first throws that context away.
