WHAT P1778 MEANS

P1778 means a CVT-equipped Sentra did not achieve expected step-motor or ratio-control response. Save CVT temperature, primary/secondary speeds, commanded ratio and companion codes; verify fluid with Nissan’s temperature procedure and test power, grounds and valve-body control. NTB10-150a applies specifically to 2010 B16 Sentra with MR20DE or QR25DE and directs control-valve assembly replacement plus applicable TCM reprogramming after its full procedure. It does not cover every Sentra CVT.

Preserve ratio data before the key is cycled

Record CVT fluid temperature, commanded and actual ratio, primary/secondary speed, step command and all TCM/ECM codes. A reset may change fail-safe behavior and remove the useful comparison.

Reproduce only in a safe setting. Slow acceleration or severe shudder in traffic is a safety issue, not a reason for repeated full-throttle testing.

The 2010 bulletin has exact engine and TCM boundaries

NTB10-150a identifies 2010 B16 Sentra with MR20DE or QR25DE and specifies a control-valve assembly procedure. TCM reprogramming depends on the current TCM part-number table.

A later Sentra or a non-CVT transmission does not inherit that repair. Identify CVT model and calibration before ordering a valve body.

Do not jump directly to complete CVT replacement

Inspect fluid level and type by Nissan’s temperature-based method, electrical supply, connectors and ESM step-motor diagnosis. Internal belt or pulley damage needs separate evidence.

After valve-body work, perform calibration entry, reprogramming and initialization exactly as required. Correct ratio response with no returning P1778 verifies the repair.
