P0301 means the PCM counted excessive misfire on cylinder 1; it does not prove a coil. Confirm engine and cylinder 1 location: a TJ 4.0L distributor/rail system, JK 3.8L, Pentastar 3.6L and JL 2.0T differ. Save cold/load counters, inspect plug 1 in cylinder order and perform only an engine-appropriate ignition swap/test. If the count stays, test injector command/delivery and compression/leak-down. Cam timing or valvetrain faults become more likely when P0340/P0016 accompany it.

Engine identification changes the ignition test

A TJ 4.0L, JK 3.8L, Pentastar 3.6L and JL 2.0T do not share the same coil layout, cylinder access or fuel system. Confirm the VIN/engine before following a video or diagram.

A coil swap is evidence only when the hardware is interchangeable and the misfire counter actually moves. Returning the known-good component prevents creating a second unknown.

Plug 1 is a combustion witness

Fuel wetness suggests lack of ignition or excess delivery; oily carbon points toward oil entry; an unusually clean plug can suggest coolant or steam cleaning. Excessive gap and cracked porcelain lead toward ignition reserve.

Photograph the plug beside a neighboring cylinder and retain it until diagnosis is complete. Mixing or discarding plugs removes cylinder-specific evidence.

Timing codes outrank parts swapping

P0340 or P0016 means the PCM also doubts cam signal or cam-to-crank relationship. That evidence can explain misfire without a failed cylinder 1 coil.

Check oil condition, synchronization data, wiring and mechanical timing before repeatedly installing ignition parts. Persistent startup rattle deserves prompt mechanical inspection.

Freeze frame is a snapshot of conditions when the PCM matured the fault. It can distinguish an idle-only problem from a load, cold-start or monitor-completion problem. Clearing first throws that context away.

Do not load the parts cannon

Do not replace a full coil set. Older Wrangler ignition architecture may not support the same swap method as a Pentastar, and a fresh plug may only hide injector, oil or compression trouble temporarily.
