2D2E Code BMW 328i: Throttle–Manifold Pressure Correlation

Diagnose BMW 328i 2D2E using exact DME text, MAP wiring, intake/crankcase smoke testing, brake-booster plumbing and adaptations.

FORD PRIMARY SOURCES·GENERATION-AWARE·REVIEWED AUGUST 21, 2026
WHAT 2D2E MEANS

BMW 2D2E means measured manifold pressure/vacuum was implausible for throttle angle; it does not automatically condemn the throttle body. Confirm the exact ISTA suffix/description, inspect MAP connector and wiring, smoke-test the induction and crankcase-ventilation system, check brake-booster/vacuum-pump plumbing and test purge sealing. After a proven repair, perform only the adaptations required by the VIN-correct test plan.

SAE/Ford description: Throttle-Valve Angle–Intake-Manifold Pressure/Vacuum Correlation
DRIVING RISKDiagnose promptly

A steady lamp with mild symptoms usually allows a short diagnostic trip. Stop for a flashing MIL, severe hesitation, stalling, overheating or fuel leakage.

2D2E diagnostic path — each candidate cause paired with the test that separates it. The full cause matrix, with the evidence each cause needs, is below.
DIAGNOSTIC ROUTER

Match the symptom

Select the closest observation. The result changes the first test; it does not name a part to replace.

START HERE

Prioritize intake, PCV and purge leakage.

CAUSE MATRIX

What can set 2D2E—and how to separate it

The order below is evidence-driven, not a universal probability ranking. Vehicle year, repair history, companion codes and the operating condition in freeze frame change where diagnosis should begin.

Possible causeEvidence that supports itFirst useful test
Unmetered intake, PCV or vacuum leakPositive correction strongest at idle and smoke localizesSmoke test

Correlation compares air model inputs

The DME compares throttle opening with manifold pressure and modeled airflow. A sensor circuit error or real air leak can create the same plausibility failure.

Save MAP, throttle angle, airflow/adaptation and companion lean faults before clearing.

Test the sensor circuit and air path

Inspect MAP terminals and load-test reference, ground and signal. Then smoke-test intake boots, manifold, crankcase ventilation and booster branches.

Test purge sealing and inspect anything disturbed during recent throttle or manifold work.

Reset adaptations only after repair

An adaptation reset cannot seal a leak or repair a biased pressure signal and may temporarily obscure evidence.

Verify plausibility through idle and part load with stable fuel correction and no returning 2D2E.

BEFORE CLEARING

Save these scan-data clues

Freeze frame is a snapshot of conditions when the PCM matured the fault. It can distinguish an idle-only problem from a load, cold-start or monitor-completion problem. Clearing first throws that context away.

TEST SEQUENCE

A practical diagnostic workflow

  1. 01
Save lambda correction at idle and load

    Pattern directs the first branch.

  2. 02
    Inspect and smoke intake/PCV

    Avoid flammable spray methods.

  3. 03
    Test purge closed-state sealing

A click does not prove closure.

  4. 04
    Validate MAF/MAP and boost path

    Use engine-specific known-good data.

  5. 05
Test low and high fuel pressure safely

Direct injection and TDI require special equipment.

  6. 06
    Check exhaust and lambda feedback

Do not replace the sensor from code wording.

  7. 07
    Verify correction under original conditions

    Confirm no pending P0171.

!
Do not load the parts cannon

Do not replace the most commonly named component from 2D2E alone. Confirm the exact engine, preserve evidence and complete the manufacturer test sequence before ordering parts.

APPLICATION BOUNDARIES

Why the model year changes the test

The 328i badge covers very different powertrains. North American E9x cars generally use naturally aspirated N51/N52 six-cylinder engines, while F30/F31 cars use turbocharged N20/N26 four-cylinder engines; other markets and swaps vary. Read VIN, chassis, engine designation, DME identification and the complete BMW fault text before using any test. A four-digit BMW fault is not safely interchangeable with a generic P-code or a fault from a 335i.

  • BMW fault text/suffix must be read from ISTA, not inferred from four digits alone.
  • N51/N52 crankcase ventilation and N20/N26 turbo intake systems differ.
  • A brake-booster vacuum leak can affect both mixture and braking assist.
  • Recent throttle/intake work raises connector, seal and adaptation checks.
COMMON QUESTIONS

2D2E FAQ

Does P0171 mean the oxygen sensor is bad?+

No. It reports excessive lean correction; leaks, measured air and fuel delivery are common causes.

Can I drive?+

Briefly with mild symptoms and steady lamp; stop for flashing misfire or stalling.

Why compare idle and load?+

Vacuum leaks usually dominate at idle while weak fuel supply worsens with demand.

Can PCV failure cause it?+

Yes, especially on engines with a diaphragm integrated into the cover.

Can purge cause it?+

Yes if the valve passes flow when it should seal.

Can an exhaust leak cause it?+

Yes before the upstream lambda sensor.

Should learning be reset first?+

No. Save adaptation evidence first.

What confirms repair?+

Correction remains near target under idle and load with no pending P0171.
