WHAT 29D1 MEANS

BMW 29D1 identifies cylinder 5 misfire; it does not identify the failed component. On an E9x N51/N52 328i, save smooth-running values and freeze data, inspect plug 5 and perform one controlled coil comparison. If the misfire remains, test the correct injector circuit/delivery, rear-manifold leakage, compression, leak-down and cam timing. A code that moves with a component and one that stays with cylinder 5 require different repairs.

Why the model year changes the test

The 328i badge covers very different powertrains. North American E9x cars generally use naturally aspirated N51/N52 six-cylinder engines, while F30/F31 cars use turbocharged N20/N26 four-cylinder engines; other markets and swaps vary. Read VIN, chassis, engine designation, DME identification and the complete BMW fault text before using any test. A four-digit BMW fault is not safely interchangeable with a generic P-code or a fault from a 335i.

  • Confirm cylinder numbering from the installed N51/N52 service diagram.
  • N54 injector-index instructions do not automatically apply to a 328i.
  • Rear intake/CCV plumbing can influence cylinders near the firewall.
