WHAT 2A82 MEANS

BMW fault 2A82 means the intake cam did not reach its VANOS target quickly enough; it is not an automatic solenoid verdict. BMW SIB 11 02 08 includes specified E90–E93 N51/N52 applications and emphasizes adequate oil supply plus completion of the ISTA test plan. Verify VIN/engine, oil level/specification/filter and pressure, compare target versus actual intake angle, test the solenoid/circuit and inspect the engine-specific oil supply, adjuster and cam hook-ring seals only when directed.

Treat 2A82 as a response fault

The DME commanded intake-cam movement and observed late or incomplete response. Electrical, hydraulic and mechanical causes remain possible.

Save target/actual angle, oil temperature and 2A87/3100 companions before clearing.

Verify oil supply before parts

Check correct oil, filter insert/cap condition and mechanical pressure. VANOS cannot respond normally without stable supply.

Run the ISTA solenoid and cam-response tests and load-test the circuit; a clicking valve may still meter poorly.

Follow the SIB's mechanical branch

If response remains abnormal, follow the applicable test plan for restriction, non-return valves, adjuster and hook-ring seal inspection.

Verify hot operation and repeated commanded movement without returning 2A82.

Why the model year changes the test

The 328i badge covers very different powertrains. North American E9x cars generally use naturally aspirated N51/N52 six-cylinder engines, while F30/F31 cars use turbocharged N20/N26 four-cylinder engines; other markets and swaps vary. Read VIN, chassis, engine designation, DME identification and the complete BMW fault text before using any test. A four-digit BMW fault is not safely interchangeable with a generic P-code or a fault from a 335i.

  • This four-digit definition is chiefly relevant to E9x N51/N52-era 328i diagnostics.
  • F30 N20/N26 uses different DME fault wording and timing hardware.
  • Swapping intake/exhaust solenoids is a diagnostic comparison, not a final repair.

Should I replace cam sensors?+

Not without waveform or circuit evidence.

It can show that the exhaust cam is no longer correctly correlated with the crankshaft.

No. A stable measured offset and mechanical checks must support that conclusion.

Can cleaning the solenoid fix it?+

Only when contamination is confirmed and the approved service method permits it; the oil-system cause still matters.
