The code combination changes the bulletin decision
Toyota's procedure first runs the automatic EVAP check. The defined branch continues when P0455 and P0441 set together, or when P0456 sets.
If P0441 appears by itself, the bulletin sends diagnosis back to the repair manual. That single sentence prevents a great deal of unnecessary cap replacement.
A purge fault can be mechanical without a circuit code
The solenoid may click electrically while its valve leaks or its passage remains blocked. Verify actual vacuum and tank-pressure change.
Post-refuel roughness is valuable timing evidence because a leaking purge path can feed a vapor-heavy mixture into the intake.
Inspect modified underbodies methodically
Skid plates and hitch wiring can obscure or contact rear EVAP hardware. Note fresh tool marks, pinched lines and stretched connectors.
Remove protection only with safe support and according to its installation instructions; do not begin a smoke test beside hot exhaust.

Freeze frame is a snapshot of conditions when the PCM matured the fault. It can distinguish an idle-only problem from a load, cold-start or monitor-completion problem. Clearing first throws that context away.

U.S.-market 4Runner diagnostics span the 1996–2002 3RZ-FE four-cylinder and 5VZ-FE V6, the 2003–2009 1GR-FE V6 and optional 2UZ-FE V8, the long-running 2010–2024 1GR-FE V6, and the 2025+ turbocharged 2.4L powertrains including i-FORCE MAX.
