WHAT P0300 MEANS

P0300 means crankshaft-speed variation indicates misfire across several cylinders or without one cylinder consistently dominating. It does not mean all coils are bad. Save cylinder counters and P0301–P0308 companions at the same rpm, load and temperature as freeze frame. One cylinder calls for plug/coil/injector/compression tests; one bank suggests bank-specific air, fuel or timing; scattered cylinders on both banks suggest shared fuel pressure, MAF, purge, crank signal or mechanical causes. Toyota P0300 calibration bulletins widely found online for the 2018 Camry and 2017–2020 Toyota 86 do not list the 4Runner and must not be applied.

Misfire distribution is the fastest diagnostic fork

If one cylinder dominates, keep the test local until evidence moves. If both banks misfire together, shared fuel, air metering or crank information becomes more plausible.

A one-bank pattern can expose an intake seal, fuel distribution or valve-timing issue that a full coil set cannot correct.

Environment matters without becoming a guess

Dust past an unsealed filter, water in a plug well and rodent damage under a parked trail vehicle are inspectable evidence. Document tracks, corrosion and routing.

Do not hose or chemically clean the engine before diagnosis. That can remove the failure evidence and introduce new moisture.

Bulletin title matches are not applicability

Search results surface Toyota P0300 reprogramming documents for other models. The first page's model/year/engine table controls—not the shared code.

Use current Toyota TIS and the 4Runner VIN to check calibration. Never substitute a calibration identifier from a different platform.
