P0455 Code Ram 1500: Large EVAP Leak by DS and DT

Diagnose Ram 1500 P0455 with filler, purge, ESIM, canister, frame-line and tank-module seal tests matched to DS or DT.

FORD PRIMARY SOURCES·GENERATION-AWARE·REVIEWED AUGUST 21, 2026
WHAT P0455 MEANS

P0455 means gross EVAP sealing loss or incorrect leak-detection behavior. Record cap/filler and recent tank, bed or pump work, then prove purge and ESIM/vent sealing and smoke-test the long frame-mounted vapor lines, canister and top-of-tank seals. DS and DT routing differs. A disconnected quick-connect can resemble a failed tank, while a P0456 software branch does not automatically apply to the larger P0455 code.

SAE/Ford description: EVAP System Large Leak Detected
DRIVING RISKService soon

Short driving is normally acceptable without odor or wet fuel. Park outdoors and stop for visible gasoline, strong vapor smell or tank damage.

P0455 diagnostic path — each candidate cause paired with the test that separates it. The full cause matrix, with the evidence each cause needs, is below.

CAUSE MATRIX

What can set P0455—and how to separate it

The order below is evidence-driven, not a universal probability ranking. Vehicle year, repair history, companion codes and the operating condition in freeze frame change where diagnosis should begin.

Possible causeEvidence that supports itFirst useful test
Missing/loose/damaged cap or fillerFound condition/seal testFiller inspection

Truck length expands the inspection

Follow vapor lines along the frame.

Look at clips, impact and bed/tank work.

An open valve mimics a large hole

Test purge and vent mechanically.

Electrical clicks are insufficient.

Platform controls routing

DS Classic and DT may share sale year.

Use VIN-correct schematic.

BEFORE CLEARING

Save these scan-data clues

Freeze frame is a snapshot of conditions when the PCM matured the fault. It can distinguish an idle-only problem from a load, cold-start or monitor-completion problem. Clearing first throws that context away.

  • Exact VIN, platform, model year and engine sales code
  • All confirmed, pending and permanent companion codes
  • RPM, load, coolant temperature and vehicle speed
  • Relevant commanded and actual scan data
  • Recent service, repairs and symptom conditions
  • Manufacturer bulletin and current software/VIN status
TEST SEQUENCE

A practical diagnostic workflow

  1. 01
    Identify platform

    Routing differs.

  2. 02
    Preserve evidence

    Record filler before changing.

  3. 03
    Test purge and ESIM/vent

    Clicking is not sealing.

  4. 04
    Smoke safely

    Section tank, canister and filler.

  5. 05
    Validate detection data

    Circuit faults can imitate leakage.

  6. 06
    Complete monitor

    Meet fuel/soak conditions.

!
Do not load the parts cannon

Do not replace the most commonly named component from P0455 alone. Confirm the exact engine, preserve evidence and complete the manufacturer test sequence before ordering parts.

APPLICATION BOUNDARIES

Why the model year changes the test

Ram 1500 spans older Dodge Ram, DS Classic and DT platforms with 3.6L Pentastar, 4.7L, 5.7L HEMI, EcoDiesel, eTorque and newer powertrains. Cylinder banks, oil control, EVAP leak detection, cam sensors and catalyst layouts differ. Confirm platform, VIN, engine sales code, market and PCM level before diagnosis.

  • Long truck-frame vapor lines add chafe/disconnection points.
  • DS and DT tank/canister locations differ.
  • Bed removal and fuel-pump service history is relevant.
  • Diesel vapor/fuel systems require exact code definitions.
COMMON QUESTIONS

P0455 FAQ

Is it always the cap?+

No.

Can I drive?+

Usually briefly without odor or wet fuel.

Can purge cause hard start?+

Yes.

Can tank service cause it?+

Yes, through seals or disconnected lines.

Can I use shop air?+

Not unregulated.

Why did a new cap fail?+

The fault may be elsewhere.

Does a P0456 flash apply?+

Not automatically to P0455.

What confirms repair?+

Passing leak test and monitor.
