P0017 means the Santa Fe ECM found Bank 1 Sensor B—normally the exhaust cam—outside its expected relationship with the crankshaft. It reports correlation, not a guaranteed sensor failure. Confirm inline-four versus V6 and Bank 1, save P0014/P0016 companions, verify oil pressure, scope crank and both relevant cams, and command exhaust CVVT. Signal dropout favors circuit diagnosis; clean waveforms with a fixed phase error favor phaser, indexing, reluctor or timing-drive inspection.

Correlation is a measured relationship

The ECM compares crank and exhaust-cam edges while accounting for commanded CVVT. Replacing both sensors cannot repair a phaser or chain that is physically out of phase.

Record which other correlation codes are present. One exhaust bank differs diagnostically from both cams or both V6 banks being displaced.

Scope the signals in the failing condition

Capture cranking, cold start and hot idle waveforms while checking loaded power and grounds. Intermittent dropout and stable angular offset are not the same fault.

Command exhaust CVVT and compare desired versus actual angle. Unsafe oil pressure must be corrected before hydraulic response can be judged.

Mechanical inspection follows waveform evidence

If phase error is stable, follow the exact engine's TDC, chain-mark, phaser and reluctor inspection. V6 and inline-four timing procedures and fasteners differ.
