Use the belt-routing figure in the Duramax diesel supplement that matches the exact LLY vehicle. The 2004.5–2005 Silverado/Sierra pickup layout is not automatically interchangeable with Express/Savana, Hummer H1, dual-generator, or modified accessory drives. Confirm RPO LLY, model, build date, generator option, and the underhood routing label first.
LLY is an engine code, not a complete accessory-drive specification. GM installed the LLY in more than one chassis and published diesel-specific supplements because the base truck manual does not contain every diesel routing detail. Search results that omit chassis and generator options can therefore put a correct-looking belt on the wrong path.
Before removal, clean and photograph the underhood routing label and the entire front drive. If the label is missing, obtain the GM diesel supplement for the VIN/model year and compare every pulley. A prior owner may have changed an alternator bracket, idler, A/C compressor, or added dual-generator hardware.

The ribbed face must contact grooved pulleys and the belt back must contact smooth idlers. A belt that physically reaches every pulley can still be misrouted, under-wrapped, or driving the water pump incorrectly.
How to use this specification correctly

Mechanical route checks
Grooved pulleys require the ribbed face; smooth pulleys require the belt back. Each span should clear brackets, hoses and wiring. Adequate wrap around the crank, water pump and driven accessories matters just as much as overall belt length.
The automatic tensioner's indicator should sit in the specified operating zone. A near-stop position can indicate a wrong belt length or route. A fluttering arm may indicate belt damage, accessory drag, pulley runout or a worn tensioner rather than a need for belt dressing.
Why the water-pump check is critical
A serpentine route controls pulley direction. Routing the back and ribbed faces incorrectly can reverse a smooth-driven component or reduce wrap enough to cause slip. GM's route must be followed rather than improvised from the shortest path.
After installation, monitor coolant temperature, charging, steering assist and A/C operation. Shut down immediately for belt walk, smoke, squeal, overheating or abnormal tensioner motion.
What to replace besides the belt
- Noisy or loose idler pulley.
- Weak, seized, cracked or misaligned tensioner.
- Leaking water pump or accessory bearing.
- Separated or wobbling crank damper.
- Oil/coolant leak that contaminated the belt.
