Dodge 360 Timing Marks: LA and 5.9 Magnum Chain Alignment

On a conventional Dodge/Chrysler 360 timing set, align the crankshaft-sprocket mark at 12 o'clock and the camshaft-sprocket mark at 6 o'clock so both lie on the exact centerline through the two shaft bores. Assemble the chain around both sprockets on the bench, spread the sprockets apart, verify the marks with a straightedge, and slide both sprockets evenly onto the crank and cam together. This is mechanical cam timing, not the vehicle's ignition-timing value.
The 360 uses the same clear factory alignment principle as the 318: the two sprocket index marks must fall on a straight line through the shaft centers. That statement is more reliable than judging clock positions from a tilted photograph, especially when an aftermarket set has several crank keyways or extra advance/retard symbols.
The 360 needs its own page because its balance hardware is a major trap. Production LA 360 and 5.9 Magnum combinations are generally externally balanced, but the amount and location of imbalance differ among applications. A neutral 318 damper or wrong flexplate can create severe vibration even when valve timing is perfect.
Ignition timing is also year-specific. Carbureted LA engines, lean-burn/electronic-era engines and Magnum PCM-controlled applications cannot share one distributor-adjustment chart. A 360 can be an LA carbureted engine or a 5.9L Magnum EFI engine, and most production 360 combinations are externally balanced. The offset weight in the damper or converter/flywheel is not a timing mark and must not be substituted or mixed with 318 neutral-balance hardware. Dot-to-dot places cylinder 6 in its firing position; rotate the crank one full revolution before setting the distributor for cylinder 1 compression.
How to use this specification correctly

Identify LA 360 or 5.9L Magnum by VIN, year and engine hardware; record cam, timing-set and damper/flywheel part numbers.

Set a known reference and record distributor position before disassembly. Diagnose chain wear and true TDC before assuming the timing set is the only fault.

Remove balancer and cover with proper tools, protect the oil-pan seal, and note LA fuel-pump eccentric/washer orientation where fitted.

Remove the distributor/oil-pump drive and use the specified cam-support tool so the cam cannot be pushed into the rear block plug during sprocket installation.

Place both sprockets on the bench with the crank mark at 12 and cam mark at 6; install the chain and spread the sprockets apart.

Use a straightedge through both bore centers to prove the marks lie on the same exact line. Identify the zero keyway on multi-keyway sets from the manufacturer instructions.

Sprocket marks and multi-keyway sets
A stock-style crank sprocket normally has one keyway and one timing dot. Performance sets may provide multiple keyways to install the cam advanced, straight up or retarded. The symbol beside the chosen keyway must be paired with the matching tooth mark specified by that manufacturer.
Do not automatically align the most obvious two dots on a multi-keyway set. Confirm the requested cam intake centerline with a degree wheel when the build calls for more than stock replacement.
LA 360 versus 5.9 Magnum
The LA version may carry a mechanical fuel-pump eccentric and uses earlier front-cover/accessory arrangements. The Magnum 5.9 uses EFI, a roller cam in production applications and PCM-managed ignition strategy. Chain alignment is similar, but the surrounding hardware and diagnostic procedure differ.
Keep cam thrust components, oiling provisions and distributor/oil-pump drive matched to the engine family. An aftermarket retrofit can combine features, so physical part numbers overrule assumptions based only on the intake manifold.
External balance is not valve timing
External balance weights correct rotating-assembly imbalance. They do not determine cam phase or ignition advance. A 360 damper may have an offset mass while also carrying a narrow timing notch; those features serve different purposes.
Verify the damper, converter/flexplate or flywheel belongs to the exact LA or Magnum rotating assembly. If the timing mark appears wrong, prove true TDC rather than moving the chain to compensate for a slipped ring or mismatched pointer.
Distributor and ignition setup
At dot-to-dot, cylinder 6 is ready to fire. Rotate the crank one turn for cylinder 1 compression and confirm both #1 valves are closed before positioning the distributor drive and rotor.
On PCM-controlled Magnum applications, base timing is not adjusted by turning the distributor in the traditional way; distributor indexing/synchronization affects injector and cam-signal relationship. Use the scan-tool/service procedure for the exact year.
