Almost every current manufacturer specifies a torque recheck a short distance after a wheel has been disturbed. It exists because mating surfaces settle — not because the first torque was done badly.
When a recheck is required
Rechecking is especially important after a wheel change, tire rotation, brake job, new wheel installation, or any work that disturbed the wheel. Heat cycles and small amounts of paint, corrosion, or debris can settle. Perform the recheck at the distance stated by the exact manual or wheel manufacturer; many late-model procedures specify a short post-service interval.
How to perform it
To recheck, let the brakes and wheels cool, place the torque wrench at the specified value, and follow the complete pattern. Do not loosen each nut first unless the service procedure specifically requires it. If a fastener turns significantly before reaching the setting, inspect the wheel seat, stud, nut, and hub rather than assuming repeated tightening will solve the cause.
