WHAT P0301 MEANS

P0301 means the ECM attributed misfire to cylinder 1; it does not automatically mean coil 1 failed. Confirm engine code and cylinder 1, preserve counters and freeze frame, then use a controlled plug/coil comparison on gasoline engines. If the count stays, test injector contribution, intake leakage and compression. A TDI has no ignition coil: evaluate diesel injection correction, rail/supply pressure, compression, glow contribution when relevant and EGR/airflow by its own procedure.

Jetta diagnostics span several generations and 2.0 MPI, 2.5 inline-five, 1.4T, 1.5T, 1.8T, 2.0T and TDI powertrains.
