P0300 Code Hyundai Elantra: Misfire Diagnosis and Bulletin Limits

Diagnose Elantra P0300 with cylinder counts, plugs, coils, injectors, fuel trims and two narrowly bounded Hyundai bulletins.

FORD PRIMARY SOURCES·GENERATION-AWARE·REVIEWED AUGUST 21, 2026
WHAT P0300 MEANS

P0300 means multiple Elantra cylinders misfired or no one cylinder dominated. Preserve P0301–P0304 counts, fuel correction, temperature and load. Hyundai TSB 20-FL-001H is limited to certain 2017 AD/ADA 2.0L cars and combines ECM updating with coil inspection. TSB 24-FL-006H covers only a production-bounded group of 2022 Elantra N 2.0T vehicles for internal injector-filter breakage. Other Elantras need plug, ignition, injector, air/fuel, compression and timing tests—not borrowed bulletin repairs.

SAE/Ford description: Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
DRIVING RISKStop soon

A flashing MIL means catalyst-damaging active misfire. Stop sustained driving. Stop also for raw fuel, severe shaking, overheating or mechanical noise.

P0300 diagnostic path — each candidate cause paired with the test that separates it. The full cause matrix, with the evidence each cause needs, is below.
DIAGNOSTIC ROUTER

Match the symptom

Select the closest observation. The result changes the first test; it does not name a part to replace.

CAUSE MATRIX

What can set P0300—and how to separate it

The order below is evidence-driven, not a universal probability ranking. Vehicle year, repair history, companion codes and the operating condition in freeze frame change where diagnosis should begin.

Possible causeEvidence that supports itFirst useful test
Worn/fouled plug or ignition faultCylinder leader and controlled swap followsLabelled plug/ignition test

Bulletin eligibility is part of diagnosis

For a 2017 2.0L AD/ADA, verify VIN, ROM and coil inspection criteria before applying Event 583 or its later replacement. The bulletin does not cover every model year.

For a 2022 Elantra N, production date and VIN origin determine the injector branch. Its all-four-injector instruction should not be generalized to another engine.

Preserve the cylinder pattern

Record cold-start, idle and loaded counts, then label plugs and move only one ignition part when a controlled comparison is valid. One-cylinder, paired-cylinder and all-cylinder patterns lead to different tests.

If the fault stays, evaluate injector contribution, low/high fuel pressure and compression/leak-down. GDI hardware retains hazardous pressure.

Verify combustion before catalyst judgment

Inspect intake leaks, purge behavior, fuel correction and P0014/P0017 timing context. Shared mixture or timing faults can look like several failed coils.

Confirm stable counts under the original safe condition and no pending P0300. Any P0420 evaluation follows only after misfire is gone.

BEFORE CLEARING

Save these scan-data clues

Freeze frame is a snapshot of conditions when the PCM matured the fault. It can distinguish an idle-only problem from a load, cold-start or monitor-completion problem. Clearing first throws that context away.

  • Exact VIN, platform, model year and engine sales code
  • All confirmed, pending and permanent companion codes
  • RPM, load, coolant temperature and vehicle speed
  • Relevant commanded and actual scan data
  • Recent service, repairs and symptom conditions
  • Manufacturer bulletin and current software/VIN status
TEST SEQUENCE

A practical diagnostic workflow

  1. 01
    Identify engine and bank layout

    Cylinder patterns differ.

  2. 02
    Preserve counters

    Save cold/load evidence.

  3. 03
    Inspect plugs in order

    Deposits direct testing.

  4. 04
    Target ignition

    Use one controlled test.

  5. 05
    Test fuel and air

    Graph pressure/trims and smoke paths.

  6. 06
    Prove mechanical health

    Use compression/leak-down/timing.

  7. 07
    Verify original condition

    Avoid a flashing-MIL road test.

!
Do not load the parts cannon

Do not replace the most commonly named component from P0300 alone. Confirm the exact engine, preserve evidence and complete the manufacturer test sequence before ordering parts.

APPLICATION BOUNDARIES

Why the model year changes the test

Elantra diagnostics span multiple sedan, Coupe, GT, Sport, N Line, Hybrid and Elantra N generations with Beta, Gamma, Nu, Kappa, Smartstream and Theta-family engines. MPI, GDI, turbocharging, CVVT, intake-runner hardware, EVAP design and campaign coverage differ sharply. Confirm VIN, body style, model year, engine code, production date, market and ECM ROM before applying any bulletin, definition or component diagram.

  • 20-FL-001H is a 2017 AD/ADA 2.0L branch.
  • 24-FL-006H covers selected 2022 Elantra N production/VIN-origin vehicles.
  • MPI, GDI and turbo engines require different fuel-safety procedures.
  • A flashing MIL means stop loading the catalyst.
COMMON QUESTIONS

P0300 FAQ

Does P0300 mean all coils failed?+

No.

Can I drive?+

Not with flashing MIL or strong shaking.

Can bad fuel cause it?+

Yes.

Should I replace plugs first?+

Inspect and record them first.

Can vacuum leaks cause it?+

Yes.

Can timing cause it?+

Yes, especially with cam/crank codes.

Why save counters?+

They reveal cylinder and bank structure.

What confirms repair?+

Stable counters under original conditions.
