WHAT P2646 MEANS

P2646 means the PCM saw the rocker-arm oil-pressure-switch signal remain in the low-voltage state when the monitored VTEC/VTC operating state required otherwise. It does not prove low engine oil pressure or a bad spool-valve assembly. Check oil level, grade, contamination and maintenance first, then identify the exact switch, connector, screen and oil passage from the Civic engine diagram. Honda bulletin 13-021 names an intermittent switch branch for 2002–2005 Civic Si and 2012–2013 Civic except Si and Hybrid. It directs switch/O-ring replacement in the matched branch and normal troubleshooting if the code returns. Other Civic years/engines do not inherit that shortcut.

Electrical wording describes a monitored state

The PCM watches whether the pressure switch agrees with the commanded rocker-arm oil state.

A low-voltage description does not distinguish a grounded circuit from hydraulic pressure holding the switch in that state.

Honda names two Civic populations and an intermittent switch failure. Trim and hybrid exclusions are explicit.

If the code returns after the bulletin repair, Honda directs normal troubleshooting rather than repeated switch replacement.

Do not replace the complete spool-valve assembly from the code alone. Bulletin 13-021 identifies a switch/O-ring branch only for listed Civics, and explicitly returns persistent codes to normal troubleshooting. Never use thicker oil to hide a pressure problem.

Civic diagnostics span D- and B-series distributor engines, the 2002–2005 K20A3 Si, R18 and K-series ninth-generation cars, 2.0L K-series and 1.5L L15 turbo models, Type R/Si calibrations, natural-gas variants and several hybrid systems. Hardware, sensor names, cylinder access, VTEC oil circuits, EVAP logic and fuel pressure differ. Confirm VIN, model year, engine, transmission, body style, emissions label and current Honda campaign status before choosing a test or part.

  • 2002–2005 Civic Si is listed in bulletin 13-021; ordinary 1.7L Civics are not listed in that branch.
  • 2012–2013 Civic except Si and Hybrid is listed; the exclusions matter.
  • Later turbo, Type R and 2.0L engines use different oil-control layouts and procedures.
  • P2646 is the low-state code; interpret it with command state rather than as a generic low-oil-pressure message.
