WHAT P0128 MEANS

P0128 means actual coolant temperature stayed below the PCM's expected regulating range after sufficient modeled warm-up. A thermostat stuck open is common, but diagnosis begins before start: after an overnight soak, ECT and intake-air temperature should be close to ambient. Graph ECT, load, speed, radiator-fan command and heater behavior through warm-up. A sensor biased cold, low coolant, trapped air, fan operation when not requested or a wrong thermostat can imitate the code. Search results frequently surface Subaru, Hyundai or Toyota P0128 bulletins; they do not authorize an Accord repair. Use Honda's exact engine/year service procedure.

P0128 normally reflects slow warm-up, but do not ignore the temperature gauge. Stop for overheating, steam, coolant loss, a warning message or heater output suddenly going cold. The cold-soak comparison is a no-parts test

After sufficient parking time, the engine and intake air approach ambient. A coolant reading far away from intake temperature before start points toward sensing/circuit bias.

Record exact values rather than relying on the blue/cold icon or dash needle. Those displays are not calibrated diagnostic instruments.

Highway airflow can expose a thermostat leak

A thermostat that cannot close may let ECT fall when vehicle speed increases airflow through the radiator. Graph speed and load alongside temperature.

Abort for unstable or rising temperature, low coolant or lost heater output. Those signs require cooling-system safety diagnosis first.

Hybrid warm-up traces need different interpretation

An Accord Hybrid can stop the gasoline engine while the vehicle remains ready, reducing heat input by design.

Use Honda's hybrid service mode and monitor procedure when required; do not compare its elapsed time directly with a conventional V6.

Do not load the parts cannon

Do not replace the thermostat solely because it is common, and never apply another manufacturer's P0128 bulletin to an Accord. A biased ECT sensor can make a good cooling system appear cold, while low coolant can become an overheating hazard after the thermostat job.
