On the 2.5L naturally aspirated engine that usually points at ordinary things — plugs, coils, a vacuum leak, fuel delivery. On some EcoBoost Escapes it can mean something considerably worse. There is a documented pattern on certain Escape EcoBoost engines where misfire is the first visible sign of coolant entering a cylinder, and it changes what you should do next.

On certain 2013–2016 Escapes with the 1.6L EcoBoost, coolant intrusion into cylinder 3 has been attributed to head-gasket and cylinder-head porosity problems. It typically shows up as a P0303 misfire on that specific cylinder, and if it is ignored it progresses to catastrophic engine damage.

On some 2017–2019 Escapes with the 1.5L or 2.0L EcoBoost, the reported issue is a lack of support in the casting between cylinders, creating a weak point where cracks can form and let coolant into the combustion chamber. Where that is confirmed, the remedy is engine replacement rather than a repair.

So before you buy plugs and coils for an EcoBoost Escape with P0300, spend five minutes on three checks: is the coolant level correct, is there white smoke or a sweet smell from the exhaust, and does a combustion-gas test show exhaust gas in the cooling system? If any of those points the wrong way, stop driving the vehicle. Continued driving with coolant entering a cylinder risks hydro-lock, which is a safety problem as well as a mechanical one.

2.5L naturally aspirated and 2.5L Hybrid

Without a turbocharger and without direct injection, these engines misfire for conventional reasons and respond to conventional diagnosis. Work through plugs, coils, vacuum leaks and fuel delivery in that order and you will find most faults.

Start with the plugs. They are the cheapest thing to inspect, they frequently show the answer outright, and on a high-mileage vehicle they are often simply due. Then use the free coil-swap test: move a coil to a different cylinder, clear the code, and see whether the misfire follows it.

On the hybrid, allow for the fact that the engine stops and starts constantly. Live data is harder to read, and the engine sees more short run cycles than a conventional car of the same age. Give it time to run continuously before judging fuel trims or misfire counters.

1.5L, 1.6L and 2.0L EcoBoost: the ordinary causes too

Coolant intrusion is the possibility you must rule out, but it is not the only cause of P0300 on these engines. Once the cooling system is confirmed healthy, the ordinary suspects apply.

Turbocharged engines are harder on spark plugs than naturally aspirated ones because cylinder pressure is higher, so plugs wear faster and gap growth causes misfire sooner. Charge-air leaks and vacuum leaks both produce a lean condition that can misfire. And on the direct-injected engines, carbon accumulation on the intake valves is a genuine cause on higher-mileage vehicles because there is no port fuel spray washing the valves clean.

Check for lean codes stored alongside the misfire. P0171 with P0300 usually means the lean condition is the cause and the misfire is the consequence — fix the air leak and the misfire goes with it.
