Confirm the proposed converter matches the truck's model year, engine, wheelbase/exhaust configuration and underhood emissions certification. Federal and California-emissions applications may not use the same part. Bank 2 is a built-in control group

Graph upstream and downstream activity, trims and misfire counts for both banks during the same stabilized drive. A Bank 1/Bank 2 split can reveal a local injector, manifold leak or cylinder issue that a single sensor trace hides.

Use the exact engine’s cylinder-numbering and bank drawing. Guessing the side on a longitudinal V6 or HEMI can lead to replacing the good converter and leaving the failing bank untouched.

A catalyst often records damage caused upstream

Repeated misfire, rich operation and oil or coolant entry can reduce oxygen storage or melt the substrate. Review permanent codes, plug deposits, injector balance and fluid-consumption history before authorizing converter replacement.

Listen for substrate rattle and test restriction if power loss is present. With a flashing MIL, stop sustained driving—the active misfire can overheat a new catalyst just as quickly as the original one.

Sensor shape alone is not a parts order

A downstream sensor normally changes more slowly than the upstream unit, but heater, bias and exhaust leaks can distort both signals. Check circuit response and inspect the exhaust cold for soot or ticking at joints ahead of the sensor.
