29D0 Code BMW X3: Cylinder 4 Misfire

Diagnose X3 29D0 by engine using labeled cylinder 4 ignition, injector, local air, compression and VANOS/timing tests.

FORD PRIMARY SOURCES·GENERATION-AWARE·REVIEWED AUGUST 21, 2026
WHAT 29D0 MEANS

BMW 29D0 identifies cylinder 4 misfire in the relevant DME family; it does not identify a coil or injector. Confirm N52, N20, N55 or another engine and whether the DME uses this code, preserve smooth-running values, label plug/coil 4 and make one controlled comparison. If the fault stays, test the installed fuel system, local intake/CCV leakage, compression and cam timing.

SAE/Ford description: Combustion Misfire, Cylinder 4
DRIVING RISKStop soon

A flashing MIL means catalyst-damaging active misfire. Stop sustained driving. Stop also for raw fuel, severe shaking, overheating or mechanical noise.

29D0 diagnostic path — each candidate cause paired with the test that separates it. The full cause matrix, with the evidence each cause needs, is below.

Select the closest observation. The result changes the first test; it does not name a part to replace.

CAUSE MATRIX

What can set 29D0—and how to separate it

The order below is evidence-driven, not a universal probability ranking. Vehicle year, repair history, companion codes and the operating condition in freeze frame change where diagnosis should begin.

Possible causeEvidence that supports itFirst useful test
Worn/fouled plug or ignition faultCylinder leader and controlled swap followsLabelled plug/ignition test

Preserve cylinder 4 evidence

Capture cold, hot and load smooth-running values and keep every component labeled.

Move one ignition part only and observe whether the fault follows.

Use the correct fuel and air test

Run engine-specific injector contribution and pressure tests and smoke-test local manifold/CCV paths.

Direct-injection engines require pressure-safe service.

Prove mechanical contribution

Use compression, leak-down and cam/VANOS data if the fault stays.

Verify the original condition without 29D0.

BEFORE CLEARING

Save these scan-data clues

Freeze frame is a snapshot of conditions when the PCM matured the fault. It can distinguish an idle-only problem from a load, cold-start or monitor-completion problem. Clearing first throws that context away.

  • Exact VIN, platform, model year and engine sales code
  • All confirmed, pending and permanent companion codes
  • RPM, load, coolant temperature and vehicle speed

TEST SEQUENCE

A practical diagnostic workflow

  1. 01
    Identify engine and bank layout

    Cylinder patterns differ.

  2. 02
    Preserve counters

    Save cold/load evidence.

  3. 03
    Inspect plugs in order

    Deposits direct testing.

  4. 04
    Target ignition

    Use one controlled test.

  5. 05
    Test fuel and air

    Graph pressure/trims and smoke paths.

  6. 06
    Prove mechanical health

    Use compression/leak-down/timing.

  7. 07
    Verify original condition

    Avoid a flashing-MIL road test.

!
Do not load the parts cannon

Do not replace the most commonly named component from 29D0 alone. Confirm the exact engine, preserve evidence and complete the manufacturer test sequence before ordering parts.

APPLICATION BOUNDARIES

Why the model year changes the test

BMW X3 diagnostics span E83, F25 and G01 generations with N52 naturally aspirated six-cylinder, N20 four-cylinder turbo, N55 six-cylinder turbo, diesel and newer B-series engines. A four-digit E-series fault may not be the native code on a later DME. Confirm VIN, chassis, engine designation, production date and complete ISTA fault text before choosing VANOS, boost, fuel or cylinder tests.

  • Cylinder 4 location/context differs on four- and six-cylinder engines.
  • N52, N20 and N55 injector/pressure procedures differ.
  • Do not apply an N54 injector bulletin to a stock X3.
  • A flashing MIL requires stopping load.
COMMON QUESTIONS

29D0 FAQ

Does P0300 mean all coils failed?+

No.

Can I drive?+

Not with flashing MIL or strong shaking.

Can bad fuel cause it?+

Yes.

Should I replace plugs first?+

Inspect and record them first.

Can vacuum leaks cause it?+

Yes.

Can timing cause it?+

Yes, especially with cam/crank codes.

Why save counters?+

They reveal cylinder and bank structure.

What confirms repair?+

Stable counters under original conditions.
