WHAT 2A87 MEANS

BMW 2A87 means the exhaust cam was late or failed to reach its VANOS target. On applicable E60 N52/N52K 528i cars, BMW's SIB directs oil-supply and ISTA testing; an F10 N20/N26 uses different hardware and often newer fault text. Verify oil/filter/pressure, graph exhaust target versus actual, test the proper solenoid/circuit, then inspect passages, adjuster, seals or recall-related hardware only when VIN and test evidence direct it.

Load-test solenoid control and connector tension and watch physical cam response during ISTA activation.

Why the model year changes the test

The 528i badge spans E39, E60 and F10 generations. North American E60 cars generally use naturally aspirated N52 six-cylinder engines, while 2012–2016 F10 cars use turbocharged N20/N26 four-cylinders; the 2011 F10 used an inline-six. VANOS faults, boost codes, cylinder numbering, fuel pressure and crankcase ventilation therefore change by year. Decode VIN and read the engine/DME plus full ISTA text before applying a four-digit code definition.

  • 2A87 is exhaust VANOS; 2A82 is intake.
  • E60 and F10 cam-control systems are not interchangeable.
  • Certain 2011 528i vehicles appear in recall 14V-176, but VIN lookup controls.
  • Hot reduced power should be captured without repeated hard driving.

Does the code prove the oil-control valve failed?+

No. Oil supply, wiring, passages, phaser, chain and feedback faults can produce it.

Can low oil cause it?+

Yes. CVVT depends on controlled engine-oil flow.

Limit driving and stop for rattle, oil warning, stalling or severe running problems.

Should I replace cam sensors?+

Not without waveform or circuit evidence.

Why check P0017?+

It can show that the exhaust cam is no longer correctly correlated with the crankshaft.

Does it prove the chain stretched?+

No. A stable measured offset and mechanical checks must support that conclusion.

Can cleaning the solenoid fix it?+

Only when contamination is confirmed and the approved service method permits it; the oil-system cause still matters.
