A vacuum-modulated transmission also needs full manifold vacuum. The round vacuum-secondary diaphragm is an internal carburetor control and should not be connected to an external manifold port.

How to use this specification correctly

    Inventory the 302's PCV, filtered breather, brake booster, distributor, transmission, HVAC/cruise and emissions vacuum needs.

    With the throttle at the specified warm idle, verify candidate ports using a vacuum gauge: manifold vacuum is present at idle; ported vacuum is normally low until the primary blades open.

How to identify manifold and ported ports

A manifold source communicates below the throttle blades and normally shows strong vacuum at a stable warm idle. A ported source is exposed as the primary blade opens and normally shows little or no signal at the specified curb-idle position.

Throttle-blade position can expose a port early, especially when a large cam requires excessive curb-idle opening. Verify the source with a gauge and correct the idle-air strategy rather than trusting nipple position alone.

PCV and filtered crankcase air

The PCV valve outlet needs full manifold vacuum through a hose sized for the valve. The opposite valve cover needs a filtered makeup-air path. Both covers require effective baffles so the circuit moves vapor rather than liquid oil.

A large rear Holley port is often convenient, but it may be needed for the booster. Use separate correctly sized manifold fittings or an engineered manifold vacuum tree instead of restricting both through a small tee.

Distributor vacuum advance

Holley notes that many applications use a port above the throttle plates for ported advance. A modified 302 may be tuned for manifold advance instead, but the choice must be validated by total mechanical-plus-vacuum timing, canister travel, idle quality, cranking behavior, part-throttle load and detonation margin.

Disconnect and plug the source when setting base timing if the ignition procedure requires it. Reconnect and record timing at idle, cruise rpm and with vacuum applied so the actual curve—not the hose label—is known.

Vacuum secondary is not an accessory port

The diaphragm housing on a vacuum-secondary Holley opens the secondary throttles using a pressure difference routed through internal carburetor passages. Its cover may be connected internally through a passage or quick-change housing; it is not fed from the intake manifold with a loose hose.

Connecting external manifold vacuum can force incorrect secondary behavior and bypass the calibrated spring/bleed system. Follow the LIST-specific secondary instructions.

Transmission and accessory branches

  • C4 variants generally do not all use the same external control arrangement; identify the exact transmission before routing.
