How to use this specification correctly

B/BAT high-current terminal

The large battery terminal carries starter-motor current. On many classic GM vehicles it also acts as a junction for protected feeds leading back to the vehicle electrical system, but the number and fusible-link sizes depend on year and chassis. A custom harness may use a separate insulated junction instead.

Stack ring terminals flat, largest current conductor nearest the designed seat where instructed, and prevent them from rotating into the solenoid case. Never add unprotected accessory feeds simply because the stud is always hot.

S start-command terminal

The S terminal energizes the solenoid windings when the key or start controller requests cranking. The path normally includes a park/neutral switch on an automatic or clutch interlock on a manual, and some later/custom systems use a starter relay between the switch and solenoid.

A click with low voltage at S can indicate resistance in the switch, connectors or interlock rather than a failed starter. Test voltage at the solenoid while the circuit is loaded and compare both positive and ground-side voltage drop.

R terminal and ignition bypass

On older points systems, the ignition coil may run through resistance wire or a ballast during normal operation. The solenoid R contact can provide a temporary full-voltage bypass during cranking, when battery voltage is already pulled down by the starter.

HEI distributors and modern ignition boxes generally require their own specified RUN-and-CRANK power feed. Connecting R without the exact diagram can backfeed or provide power only while cranking, causing an engine that starts when the key is held but dies in RUN—or can damage electronics.

Ground path and heat management

Most passenger-car starter assemblies ground through metal contact with the engine. Paint, corrosion, loose mounting bolts, a poor block-to-battery cable or missing body strap increases resistance and heat. Do not rely on small body grounds to carry cranking current.

Small-block starters sit close to the exhaust. Use factory-style shields, correct cable routing and high-temperature protection where specified. Heat-soak symptoms should be proven with voltage drop, current draw, clearance and temperature checks rather than automatically adding a remote relay.

  • Confirm battery state of charge and terminal condition.
  • Check whether S receives the specified voltage during CRANK.
  • Measure positive drop from battery positive to starter B while cranking.
  • Measure negative drop from starter housing/block to battery negative while cranking.
